This video is about looking at using multiple lithium cells in series as a battery pack to embed in projects and have the solution work like a laptop battery. I look at using a BMS and the problems with that approach as well as thing to consider and how to address some of the problems while working out a better, safer and cheaper solution.

horse1066 : I didn't understand why you were adding relays.
Edit: OK after 20 odd rewinds I think I've got it, maybe I'm just tired today. Not sure why you are not using the other contact NC/NO to just select the appropriate power source and just use the one relay.
The random wiring angles makes this hard to follow although the idea is good, the music while you are talking is a big distraction for older people, labelling the relays with Trig etc would have helped I feel.

John Michael Stock : I've just done some tests on this board. If I have 3 cells, 4.1v, 3.33v, 4.18v and start charging, as soon as one of the cells (the last one) hits ~4.26ish it cuts off charging for ALL of them. While I understand this is not a balance BMS, I thought the behaviour was that it only cut off the charging on the individual cells that are already at max and continues with the ones that are not (the 3.33v one)? Is this the experience you're having?

John Michael Stock : Inspired by your video, I've done some tests on this board myself and have found it to have several problems. If I have 3 cells, 4.1v, 3.33v, 4.18v and start charging, as soon as one of the cells (the last one) hits ~4.26ish it cuts off charging for ALL of them. John Michael Stock : 9:41 Have you since confirmed the cutoff was 15v? As you know, that's 5v per cell, which is extremely high considering that means it wont cut off at 4.9v per cell. That's very dangerous and could cause a fire/explosion. The specs say 4.25v-4.35v, which I'm not inclined to believe. You'd be better off using a multi meter set to MAX or better still an oscilloscope to check this for sure rather than the bench PSU as it clicks on and off. Maybe another video if you've not explored this yet? Great video though, thanks.
John Michael Stock : I would have been tempted to not solder the BMS to the battery pack directly, but to connect them via a 4 pin JST connecter and XT60 plug. That way you could connect the pack to a battery monitor like a CellMeter-9 to check individual cells or even to a battery pack charger like an iMAX B6. Because apparently the iMAX manual recommends not having a BMS attached when charging.. which is ok if they are connected via the plugs I suggested.
